Five generations devoted to winemaking
Heritage & Family
The history of Viñedos y Bodegas de la Marquesa dates back to the second half of the 19th century, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, one of Spain’s most distinguished and renowned wine-growing regions. It was during this period that Don Francisco Javier Solano y Eulate, Marqués de la Solana, took a visionary step forward by producing premium wines following Bordeaux winemaking techniques and bottling them under his own brand. His pioneering spirit was soon recognized, earning a silver medal at the Logroño Exhibition in 1898 and a gold medal at the Barcelona Universal Exhibition in 1929.
With the second generation, María Teresa and María Solano, the winery not only endured the challenges of the time but emerged stronger than ever. In an era when few women managed estates, they successfully replanted the vineyards after the phylloxera plague and upheld their father’s legacy with determination and foresight.

In the 1970s, María (daughter of María Solano) and her husband brought a more ambitious vision, renovating the winery and vineyards, registering the Valserrano brand, and laying the foundations for modernization. Their innovative spirit paved the way for the generations to come.
Today, with over a century of winemaking tradition, the estate remains in the hands of the founding family. Juan Pablo de Simón, great-grandson of the Marqués, represents the fourth generation, leading the project with a steadfast commitment to excellence. Combining heritage and innovation, he crafts wines that embody the true essence of the Rioja Alavesa terroir.
The future is already underway. The fifth generation —Pablo, Jaime, and María de Simón— have already taken on key roles within the family business, ensuring a smooth generational transition. Their mission is clear: to preserve the core values that have defined the winery since its inception —family tradition, estate-grown vineyards, passion for wine, and uncompromising quality— and to carry them forward into the future generations.
In every bottle of Bodegas de la Marquesa, there beats a story of heritage, terroir, and excellence.
