Honouring the land and its legacy

Vineyards

In the heart of Rioja Alavesa, our 60 hectares of estate-owned vineyards, together with 5 hectares from long-standing trusted growers, yield around 350,000 kilograms of grapes each year, the origin of wines with a unique and unmistakable identity. Most of them are located in Villabuena, just a short distance from the winery.

Our vineyards stretch across sunlit slopes descending from the Sierra de Cantabria, which shelters them from the north, down to the Ebro River in the south-southwest. This privileged location, with its predominantly limestone-clay soils and an average altitude of 400–500 meters, gives rise to wines of distinctive character and remarkable expression.

These limestone-clay soils offer extraordinary benefits for the vines, promoting a slower and more balanced ripening process that produces smaller grapes with higher concentration of sugars, aromas, and tannins. The result is wines with greater minerality, complexity, and exceptional aging potential, both in barrel and in bottle.

Guided by a single purpose —to craft wines of the highest quality— our vineyards have an average age of 40 to 50 years. Among them stand out El Ribazo, Las Canteras, and Rubiales, while our oldest and least productive vineyards, such as Monteviejo, La Piñera, El Pedregal, Ventriles, and Don Pedro, yield grapes of exceptional quality. Each of our vineyards is far more than a parcel of land —it is memory, identity, and the promise of an unrepeatable wine.

Our vineyards are planted mainly with Tempranillo and Viura, the two varieties that best embody the typicity of Rioja and define the style of our wines. To add distinctive nuances and complexity, we also cultivate Graciano and Mazuelo, which play key roles in our Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva blends, and in exceptional vintages are bottled as 100% varietal wines. With an eye toward continuous research and improvement, in 2014 we planted small experimental plots of Maturana Tinta and Chardonnay to further enrich the diversity and expression of our vineyards

Tempranillo

The emblem of Rioja Alavesa, Tempranillo represents 80% of our vineyards and forms the backbone of our red wines. It produces wines of exceptional balance between power and finesse: intense in color, with silky tannins and a freshness that ensures longevity. Its aromas combine ripe red and black fruit with delicate floral and spicy notes, resulting in wines that are elegant, complex, and capable of long aging. In Rioja Alavesa, Tempranillo is not just a variety —it is the very soul of some of the world’s most admired red wines.

Viura

Viura displays a fresh and elegant character, closely tied to the altitude and limestone soils of Rioja Alavesa. Traditionally used in Rioja white blends, here it achieves a unique balance of smoothness and vitality. Its wines show delicate floral, citrus, and white fruit aromas that, with time in bottle, evolve into honeyed and nutty notes of great complexity. Its natural acidity provides both finesse and longevity, making Viura the foundation of age-worthy and expressive white wines

Mazuelo

Similar a la variedad de uva “Carignan”. Also known as Carignan, Mazuelo reveals a unique personality in Rioja Alavesa. Its late budding protects it from spring frosts, while the region’s altitude and limestone soils allow for slow, balanced ripening. The result is wines of deep color, vibrant acidity, and firm tannins that provide structure and elegance. Its fruit, floral, and balsamic notes make it an ideal complement to traditional blends as well as a distinctive, expressive varietal.

Maturana Tinta

One of Rioja’s most ancient and distinctive varieties, Maturana Tinta has been rediscovered for its singular character. Adapted to the limestone soils and cool climate of Rioja Alavesa, it yields low production but wines of remarkable intensity and personality. Deep in color, with firm tannins and well-integrated acidity, it offers aromas of black fruit, spices, and mineral notes that clearly reflect the terroir resulting in complex, structured wines with exceptional depth.

Graciano

An indigenous variety of Rioja, Graciano thrives in the cool climate and calcareous soils of Rioja Alavesa. Its long growing cycle allows for slow maturation while retaining natural freshness. The wines are deep in color, with bright acidity and intense aromas of flowers, spices, and balsamic notes, offering great aging potential. In blends, it enhances Tempranillo with vibrancy and longevity, while on its own it reveals an authentic and sophisticated personality, confirming its status as one of the region’s hidden gems.

Chardonnay

In Rioja Alavesa, Chardonnay finds a privileged environment that enhances its elegance and freshness. The altitude of the vineyards and the calcareous soils promote a slow, balanced ripening, preserving its natural acidity and highlighting fine aromas of white fruit, citrus, and delicate floral notes. It blends harmoniously with local varieties such as Viura, producing wines of great complexity, volume, and creamy texture, adding a modern and cosmopolitan dimension to the winemaking heritage of Rioja Alavesa.
