VALSERRANO MAZUELO 2021

Grape and Wine Identity

A wine that vindicates the historic role of this variety in the great wines of Rioja. It reflects the winery’s philosophy of crafting wines with a strong sense of identity, faithful to the terroir of Rioja Alavesa.

A serious, deep and gastronomic wine, designed for slow enjoyment and ageing. The Mazuelo grape (also known as Cariñena or Carignan) displays its full character with a unique personality. Its late budding protects it from spring frosts, while the altitude and limestone soils of Rioja Alavesa allow for slow, balanced ripening. The result is wines of intense colour, great freshness and vibrant acidity that provide longevity, together with firm tannins that add structure and elegance. Mazuelo is an ideal partner both in traditional blends and in expressive single-varietal wines destined to surprise.

Valserrano Mazuelo 2021 is a wine with energy, fresh aromas and bright acidity that captivates—ideal for those who enjoy discovering something different each time.

Winemaking and Ageing

Made from selected grapes from our “Las Carretas” vineyard, located in a well-protected ravine with southern exposure and intense sunlight. Planted in 1990 on clay-limestone soils, the vineyard is harvested manually to ensure strict grape selection.

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by prolonged macerations that allow for precise extraction while respecting the natural structure and freshness of the variety.

The wine is then aged for 18 months in previously seasoned French and American oak barrels, ensuring that the oak does not overshadow the characteristic aromas of the variety. Bottle ageing has continued since April 2025.
